Inauguration of Mong Duong 2 TTP

On October 26 in Hanoi, AES-TKV Mong Duong Power Company Limited (AES Mong Duong) held the inauguration ceremony of BOT Mong Duong 2 Thermal Power Plant (capacity of 1,240 MW). This is the first and largest BOT thermal power plant in Vietnam, with 2 units with a total capacity of 1,240 MW, built in Cam Pha City, Quang Ninh Province.

Attending the ceremony were Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Cao Quoc Hung, US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius, Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Jun Dae Joo, representatives of ministries, departments, branches and localities.

On the side of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), Deputy General Director of EVN Ngo Son Hai attended.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. David Stone - CEO of AES Mong Duong, said that the Mong Duong 2 Thermal Power Project was started in December 2010 and had a total investment of about 2.1 billion US dollars. The project is built in the form of Build - Operate - Transfer (BOT), which will be transferred to the Vietnamese Government after 25 years of operation.

Since April 2015, the factory has been put into commercial operation, completing 6 months ahead of schedule. To date, Mong Duong 2 Thermal Power Plant has generated over 4 million kWh since the date of synchronizing with the national grid. The plant is expected to produce more than 7.6 billion kWh per year.

Cao Quoc Hung, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, said that according to the Electricity Planning VII, the total capacity of newly built coal power sources by 2020 will reach about 36,000 MW, accounting for 46% of the total power capacity of the nation. To achieve the above goals, besides EVN - the key player in power investment and development in Vietnam, the Government of Vietnam has issued many guidelines and policies to encourage domestic and foreign investors to participate in building electricity.

Deputy Minister also directed AES Mong Duong to operate the plant safely, according to the plan, taking note of measures to handle ash, slag, ensure the environment.
